Connor Kurth is an intelligent forward that processes the game at a high level. His superior vision comes out most in his passing and ability to create turnovers. Kurth passes the puck with both speed and accuracy, routinely setting up teammates perfectly, providing them countless high-quality scoring opportunities. His passes generally end up on his teammate’s stick, eliminating the need for a receiving player to adjust or shift body weight to obtain the puck. Kurth does not shy away from difficult pass attempts, executing cross-ice and long stretch passes with both frequency and efficiency. Defensively, Kurth is a master at reading pass attempts and causing turnovers. He consistently positions himself perfectly to intercept passes near the blue line, resulting in quality transition opportunities. He is also quite successful at stripping away the puck from opponents, making him a multi-threat on defense that opponents must always account for.
Kurth’s strengths make him an effective weapon in transition, resulting in most of his point production occurring in these situations. He thrives in quick-thinking scenarios, providing teams with a player that can change a game with one play. Typically, his scoring comes from opportunities close to the net where he can let off a quick wrister near the goaltender. He favors the right side of the net but will adjust if the netminder closes it off. Kurth’s puck handling is not overly flashy, however, it is effective enough in space to create quality opportunities. Conversely, Kurth still needs to work on his 5-on-5 zone play, especially on defense. Being a player who succeeds while in motion at a fast pace, he occasionally struggles when forced to slow things down. Kurth’s aggressive nature results in a lot of great opportunities that highlight his strengths. Simultaneously, it causes positional exposure when he misses on a turnover attempt, leading to quality chances for opponents. In Connor Kurth, teams receive someone who can alter a game’s outcome with just one or two plays. He will just need to continue to work on improving his zone-play at the next level.
