St. Louis had stood out sporadically through the round-robin pool play, but in this game, he was an early standout. Early in the game he showed good improvisation and puck control on the powerplay, which enabled him to suck some of the penalty killers out of position and distribute the puck to a forward who could execute a more dangerous play. Throughout the game he showed really good offensive awareness, scanning quickly and making passes in the offensive zone to optimal areas for scoring, including a number of should-have-been goals on redirections.

Third Round
St. Louis is a simple dman in that he is always looking for a play and making a tape-to-tape pass. He is a safe reliable player that has a great first 3 last 3. Meaning he is hard back on pucks, makes a hard first pass, and then makes 3 hard strides to join the rush. Simple and effective player that will be strong long term and will really round out a college lineup. The playmaking that St. Louis makes is often in the dzone to lead a breakout or in the neutral zone to get the forwards moving in transition. His passes hitting a player in stride, rather then hitting them when they are at a stand still. He excels at the little things.

2022 USA Hockey Select 17s - Red vs Forest Green
As in his opening performance of the tournament, Lucas St. Louis continued to show additional depth and development in his game against Team Forest Green. He’s always possessed an inherent level of patience and composure but I’ve been impressed with the ways in which he is finding to apply that composure in conjunction with skill and judgement. While handling the puck low in the neutral zone, St. Louis uses his evasive footwork to scan and assess his options. His composure with the puck helps him to make objective reads and execute without excessive delay. If extra urgency is required, St. Louis has an inherent since for it – his decision to rush the puck is seamless which enables him to ensure the puck makes it out of the zone without risk on most occasions. Defensively, despite modest physical development, St. Louis has embraced the underdog mentality of his father and is more than willing to use his existing strength to make contact with the puck carrier. He’s proven to have a surprisingly sturdy lower half in contact and seems to be handling the physical challenges just fine.

2022 USA Hockey Select 17s - Red vs Royal Blue
The slippery Luca St. Louis continues to show that he can impact games with deceptive body maneuvers and a cheeky awareness for unexpected passing lanes. He has an ability to manipulate the game to suit his strengths and that seems to be something that has carried him well for a couple of years now. Using subtle head fakes or shoulder dips, Lucas is able to open ice for himself to get the puck reliably to his forwards. Throughout this game he showed a high attention to detail, making timely pinches, and giving the extra effort required to win puck battles, and extend plays with creativity and by outsmarting his opponents. Using strategic posture he was able to outbattle bigger players, while his responsible commitment to regaining his position after a rush meant that he was regularly able to put himself in passing or attacking lanes to create turnovers.
