Hagens is a really good player that makes every little play all over the ice. Skates well, but needs to grow and fill out his frame. Has some height left to grow and we think he is going to be a great D1 player. A 4-8 round USHL pick in our eyes. Another player that has a great body of work, but the more things open before the draft the better he will be and higher he will go.

I’m not sure if any defender managed to have a larger impact in dictating defensive zone play than Michael Hagens did. It’s not by a margin that makes his case inarguable, but I think Hagens dictated play in the slot and minimized dangerous chances very well — something that shouldn’t be too large of a surprise for anyone who has seen the Chicago Steel defender.
Hagens is a player that I still have a bit of a smaller sample size than others so I’m still getting familiar with what he really offers as a player, but the impression I had prior to the game is the one I finished the game with. Hagens has modest size and strength that he’s able to leverage in physical encounters when necessary and reinforces it with a responsible defensive stick that usually lures opponents to the outside unless he’s caught with his momentum working against him. He maintains control as a puck carrier to allow for directional changes as lanes open and close in transition, complimented by a soft touch for passing so that linemates are able to get easy receptions. This style of game control doesn’t boast tremendous offensive upside (although that upside can grow with some productive game reps over the next few years) but it does dictate possession and safety, something coaches really appreciate. It’s what allowed Hagens to finish the game with one of the highest TOI for a defender (16:21, 5th in the game and just seconds behind 4th) and end up as a +3 even though he wasn’t awarded any of the points in the contest.

2022 USA Hockey Select 17s - Kelly Green vs Columbia Blue
Give Michael Hagens the puck and things, often good ones, will happen. One of the most slippery and elusive defensemen in the tournament, the creative Hagens is extremely motivated to apply offensive pressure with the use of his speed and athleticism. The quick and long defenseman is skilled with loose puck dekes and competent at recovering his possession. In instances where the puck does get a little further than expected, he’s content to engage with his opposition physically to correct for his excessiveness.

All data is in percentile form. If a player rating is 90, this means he is better than 90% of all players of the same position (forward or defense) in this stat in his specific league.
Unless otherwise stated, all data is at 5 on 5 per 60 minute rates.
Ratings for offense, defense and transition include more stats than listed on this player card.
